In the heart of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace, residence of Japanese imperial family and the original site of Edo Castle Tokugawa shogun who ruled Japan since 1600 until 1867.

Imperial Palace "Kokyo" is surrounded around its perimeter by imposing walls erected with huge rocks and ditches where swans swim today.
At the foot of the walls lies the vast esplanade known as "Kokyo Gaien" (outdoor gardens) and populated by over 2000 pine trees.

The only public area is Kokyo Higashi Gyoen (Jardines del Este), the gardens located in what once were the inner defenses of the castle in Edo and where there are ruins of the main tower where you access across the "honmaru" , the walls were the main circle of defense and "ninomaru" (second circle of defense of the castle).
The construction of the tower was completed in 1638 was the tallest building in Japan with 58m high but in the year 1657, only 19 years later was destroyed by fire which destroyed the city and never rebuilt.

The wide promenade along the outer walls of the palace along the moat is a popular place to practice some sport. The route is about 5 km.
